Tarot and Foxes

Welcome to Season 12 of Every Day Tarot! This season, we’re exploring the sacred bond between the tarot and our animal allies.

Animals are ancient storytellers. They whisper truths about our intuition, reflecting our fears and desires, guiding us through cycles of change, and reminding us of the wild magic woven into the natural world.

In this episode, we talk about foxes—intelligent and resourceful creatures who’ve earned a reputation as sly tricksters and silent observers. With their cat-like grace, clever survival strategies, and sharp perception, foxes appear in myth and magic as guides through the unknown and symbols of feminine cunning and adaptability. Their energy reminds us that survival can be curious, clever, and even playful.

Let’s dig into their lore, their tarot appearances, and the lessons they bring when they show up in your life (or your deck!)

What we explore in this episode:

  • Fox symbolisms in myth and magic

  • How fox energy relates to certain tarot archetypes

  • The message of the fox: trust your instincts and let your cleverness lead the way

Fox Symbolism in Myth & Magic

Often seen as cunning shapeshifters, they straddle the line between seen and unseen, known and mysterious.

In Japanese mythology, foxes (kitsune) are shapeshifting messengers of the gods, blending wisdom and trickery. Some are protectors, and often serve as messengers for the kami Inari and symbolize transformation, sensuality, and deep intelligence. But they can be mischievous spirits meant to teach a lesson too!

In Celtic and Druidic tradition, foxes are guides through those in-between spaces of dusk, forest, and dream. Their presence offers safety in mystery and counsel in transition.

In various Indigenous stories, foxes appear as tricksters or teachers, helping humans learn balance through humor, stealth, or strategic interference.

Fox energy represents:

  • Playfulness & curiosity

  • Seduction, enchantments, & mystery

  • Strategy, evasion, or intellectual agility

  • Messengers & shapeshifters who move between worlds

Tarot Cards Featuring Fox Energy:

Foxes appear most often in animal-based decks, where their archetypal energy reflects new beginnings, adaptability, and strategic magic.

  • The Fool (Anima Mundi Tarot & Desert Illuminations Tarot)

Both decks depict a fox stepping playfully into the unknown—alert, but open. This reflects the Fool’s capacity to trust instinct, take risks, and adapt as needed. The fox’s light-footed path mirrors the Fool’s invitation to journey lightly.

  • The Magician (Therapist Who Tarot Deck)

Fox energy shows up as the Magician’s mental agility and intuitive focus. As a shapeshifter and manifestor, the fox embodies personal power that’s grounded in cleverness, timing, and a deep understanding of tools—both physical and magical.

  • Fox (Druid Animal Oracle)

A guide for those walking between worlds. The fox in this oracle teaches when to speak, when to stay silent, and how to navigate diplomacy without falling into deceit. This card calls us to move through life with both grace and discernment.

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:

From The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle by Fen Inkwright, I pulled The Adventurer, a card of responsibility and expectations.

This card speaks to the burden of others’ expectations and the fatigue of feeling like you must carry everything yourself. Like the fox, you don’t have to rush. Break things down into smaller parts. Observe the terrain before leaping. Ask for help, after all, there’s no prize for doing it all alone.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where are you trying to do everything alone?

  • What expectations have you internalized that don’t belong to you?

  • Where can you shift your approach by being just a little more playful, observant, or unexpected?

A 12-Week Tarot for Transformation Journey

Starting in late August, I’m inviting you to join me for a 12-week live course based on Tarot for Transformation!

We’ll spend three months together, working through the major arcana as archetypal guides. Each week, we’ll:

  • Focus on one major arcana card and the life themes it highlights.

  • Explore journaling prompts and exercises from Dreya Blume’s book.

  • Share experiences and support each other in a safe, witchy, and affirming space.

  • Participate in live one-hour calls (with replays available if you can’t join live).

This is not just about learning tarot — it’s about using tarot as a vessel for real, meaningful change in your life.
