Tarot and Owls

Welcome to Season 12 of Every Day Tarot! This season, we’re exploring the sacred bond between the tarot and our animal allies.

Animals are ancient storytellers. They whisper truths about our intuition, reflecting our fears and desires, guiding us through cycles of change, and reminding us of the wild magic woven into the natural world.

In this episode, we talk about the owls—elusive birds of prey known for their silent flight, sharp perception, and wisdom. They have long been associated with intuition, death and rebirth, and feminine magic. They show us the power of observation and the necessity of listening in the dark. When owl energy appears, we are asked to slow down, sense more deeply, and trust our inner knowing.

Let’s dig into their lore, their tarot appearances, and the lessons they bring when they show up in your life (or your deck!)

What we explore in this episode:

  • Owl symbolisms in myth and magic

  • How owl energy relates to certain tarot archetypes

  • The message of the owl: discernment, feminine intuition, and trusting your inner voice in the dark

Owl Symbolism in Myth & Magic

Owls appear across cultures as both revered and feared. They are often portrayed as guides of wisdom, messengers of death, and symbols of protection.

In Greek mythology, owls were sacred to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy. Their ability to see clearly in the dark made them symbols of truth, intellect, and guidance during difficult times.

In Indigenous North American traditions, owls can represent protection, ancestral spirits, or even warnings—depending on the tribe and context. Some Siberian and Inuit shamans viewed owls as spirit guides or soul carriers between worlds.

In Celtic and Irish folklore, the owl is tied to Cailleach, the Crone goddess, death and rebirth, and sacred feminine mystery. Medieval European traditions often saw owls as omens or witches in disguise.

Owls represent:

  • Deep intuition and the wisdom of silence

  • Seeing what’s hidden, especially in shadow or darkness

  • Death, rebirth, and the unseen world

  • Feminine power, psychic perception, and stillness

  • Protection, boundaries, and independence

Tarot Cards Featuring Owl Energy:

Owls aren’t present in every deck, but when they do appear, they tend to highlight themes of hidden wisdom, insight, and truth-telling.

  • High Priestess (Sasuraibito Tarot)
A soft, intuitive figure sits with an owl perched in her lap. The owl symbolizes hidden knowledge, calm presence, and sacred mystery.

  • High Priestess (Anima Mundi Tarot)
A barn owl soars through the dark, holding scrolls in its talons. This card evokes the secrets of the unconscious and calls you inward to trust your intuitive senses.

  • Queen of Swords (Anima Mundi Tarot)
Depicted as a Eurasian Eagle Owl, this Queen is perceptive, clear-headed, and fierce. She reminds us to speak truth with clarity and to separate emotion from discernment when needed.

  • Owl Medicine (Native Spirit Oracle)
A card of intuition, feminine knowing, and hidden perception. This owl invites us to move inward, to speak only when needed, and to trust what we know—even if others don’t see it yet.

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:

From The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle by Fen Inkwright, I pulled The Orator, a card of communication and confidence.

The Orator reminds us that it’s okay to need time to find the right words. Practice, scripts, and rehearsal don’t make your voice less authentic—they help you shape your truth with intention. Like the owl, let your silence be full of sight. And when it’s time to speak, let your words land with clarity and magic.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where are you hesitant to speak your truth?

  • What would support you in being more confident or expressive?

  • Can you honor your inner knowing, even if it takes time to put into words?
