Tarot and the Moon

Welcome to Season 10 of Every Day Tarot!

This season, I’m exploring the rich, magical intersections between tarot and witchcraft.

What we explore in this episode:

  • The Moon card in tarot and its connection to the subconscious, shadow self, and intuition

  • How the Moon invites us to embrace uncertainty and lean into mystery

  • Moon rituals, dream journaling, and working with lunar energy

  • A special Moon phase tarot spread for working with your intentions and intuition

Today’s episode is all about the moon, its symbolism in tarot, its magic in ritual, and how it guides our intuition.

The Moon card in tarot is rich with symbolism. It calls us into the shadows, into places where logic steps back and intuition takes the lead. While the Sun card shines light and clarity, the Moon invites us to sit with uncertainty, dreams, and deeper emotional tides.

In different decks, the Moon is depicted in various ways: as a powerful goddess, a glowing celestial body above dark water, or a mysterious pathway under starlight. Each image reminds us to explore beyond the obvious, to honor what we sense but may not fully understand.

How to do a 4-card Moon Phase spread:

1. Choose your signifier card (card 1)

Pick one card to represent you, the situation, or the energy you’re focusing on.

2. Pull 4 Cards

Lay them out in a row from left to right:

  • Card 2: New Moon, to the right of the signifier card.
Your starting point. What new seed is ready to be planted? What intention is emerging? This card helps you clarify your focus and set a clear beginning.

  • Card 3: Waxing Moon, above the signifier card.
How to nurture your intention. What actions, steps, or support will help your idea grow? This is the phase of taking action and building momentum.

  • Card 4: Full Moon, to the left of the signifier card.
The fullest expression of your intention. What is coming to light? What is the best possible outcome or the peak potential? This card illuminates your goal at its highest vibration.

  • Card 5: Waning Moon, below the signifier card.
What needs to be released or refined? What lessons need to be integrated? What can be let go of to prepare for the next cycle? This card guides you in closing the current chapter and making space for what’s next.

3. Reflect and Record

Sit with the cards. Let the imagery and energy speak to you. You can write down what comes up, draw connections between the three cards, or just hold the insights in your heart for the day.

Here’s what came up in today’s reading using the Therapists Who Tarot Deck:

  • Signifier Card: The High Priestess — representing the theme of deep intuition and inner knowing.

  • New Moon: The Hermit — the importance of solitary study and personal reflection as a foundation.

  • Waxing Moon: Three of Cups — finding supportive community and joyful sharing as you grow.

  • Full Moon: King of Swords (Reversed) — a reminder to balance mental clarity with softness and to avoid overthinking.

  • Waning Moon: Seven of Spirals (Reversed) — the invitation to slow down, avoid forcing outcomes, and honor natural rhythms.

Today's Tarot Pull:

From The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle by Fen Inkwright, I pulled The Smith (upright), a card about overthinking and taking action. This card urges us to move forward even when it feels scary or imperfect, reminding us that lingering too long in planning can hold us back.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where might you be overthinking instead of acting?

  • What small step can you take today toward something that matters to you?

  • How can you trust your intuition to guide you rather than getting stuck in analysis?
