How do I explain tarot to other people?

Frequently Asked Questions: Tarot, Witchcraft, & Divination

Welcome to Season 14 of Every Day Tarot! This season, I’m answering your most frequently asked questions about tarot, witchcraft, and divination.

Today’s question: How do I explain tarot to other people?

If you’ve ever pulled out a deck at a party, mentioned your tarot practice to a friend, or even listed it on your professional bio, you’ve probably been met with a range of reactions—curiosity, skepticism, fear, or delight. Tarot means different things to different people, and sometimes the hardest part is figuring out where to begin when someone asks.

In this episode, I share clear, compassionate ways to explain tarot to the curious, the skeptical, and the religious—without getting defensive.

What we explore in this episode:

  • What tarot is and how to reframe ‘scary’ cards

  • Boundaries for when someone wants to debate your practice

  • Why tarot resonates with artists, queers, and sensitives

Release the guilt, build small and steady habits

Getting back into tarot isn’t about “catching up” or doing it perfectly. Even one card pulled with intention is enough to spark reconnection and remind you that your deck is always waiting for you. The most important step is to release pressure.

  • One-card pulls - Shuffle once, draw a single card, and spend some time noticing what it stirs in you.

  • Tarot snapshots - Snap a photo of your daily card and give it a one-word caption. Let it be playful.

  • Weekly check-ins - Choose one day each week to pull a card for the week ahead.

These simple practices reawaken your tarot muscles without adding pressure.

Use Natural Rhythms as Anchors

If daily cards feel overwhelming, let nature guide you.

  • Lunar cycles - Pull cards on new and full moons.

  • Seasonal markers - Solstices, equinoxes, and sabbats can anchor your readings.

  • Life transitions and milestones - Moving, starting a new job, or even “it’s Friday” can all be reasons to pull a spread.

Tarot doesn't need to follow a strict witchy calendar. You are allowed to choose the rhythms that feel aligned with your energy.

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:

From Norse Goddess Rune Oracle by Rebecca Joy Stark and illustrated by Sharon McLeod, I pulled the Eir (Upright).

Healing is both an inner and collective act, reminding us to reach out for support when needed and to offer care when we can.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where in my life am I being called to prioritize healing right now?

  • Do I need to step into the role of the healer or allow myself to be supported?

  • What habits or patterns are stagnating my growth, and how might I gently release them?

A 12-Week Tarot for Transformation Journey

Starting at the end of September, join me for a 12-week live course based on Tarot for Transformation!

We’ll spend three months together, working through the major arcana as archetypal guides. Each week, we’ll:

  • Focus on one major arcana card and the life themes it highlights.

  • Explore journaling prompts and exercises from Dreya Blume’s book.

  • Share experiences and support each other in a safe, witchy, and affirming space.

  • Participate in live one-hour calls (with replays available if you can’t join live).

This is not just about learning tarot — it’s about using tarot as a vessel for real, meaningful change in your life.

If you've ever longed for a supportive community to explore big personal shifts, or if you’re ready to commit to discovering your most authentic self, this journey is for you.

You can sign up to receive more information (no FOMO!). We’re planning to begin at the end of August, so there’s plenty of time to get ready.
