Tarot and Amethyst
Tarot & Crystals
Welcome back to Every Day Tarot, your daily dive into the wisdom of the cards. Season 15 is all about tarot and crystals, and today we’re exploring the mystical and protective energy of amethyst.
Amethyst has long been associated with protection, intuition, and purification. It is a stone of the goddess, a symbol of wisdom and boundaries, and a companion for those walking spiritual paths.
In this episode, we explore the myth of the nymph Amethyst, the stone’s magical correspondences, and its resonance with tarot archetypes of clarity and devotion.
What we explore in this episode:
The origins, legends, and magical qualities of amethyst
Astrological associations with Venus, the Moon, Uranus, and Aquarius
My personal reflections on birthstones, boundaries, and purple as a spiritual color
Amethyst: Myth, Magic & Meaning
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz whose name means “not drunken” in Greek, reflecting its ancient reputation as a charm against intoxication. In mythology, amethyst originates from the nymph Amethyste/Amethystos (Ἀμέθυστη), transformed into quartz by Artemis to protect her from Dionysus. Wine spilled upon the stone turned it violet, blessing it with protective and sobering qualities. This myth weaves together themes of sobriety, protection, and divine blessing.
In magical practice, amethyst has been used for:
Breaking curses and repelling nightmares
Enhancing psychic development and wisdom
Purification of spaces, energy, and the self
Creating sacred space for devotion and ritual
It aligns with the elements of Air and Spirit and resonates with Venus, the Moon, and Aquarius. Amethyst is often linked to Artemis and Diana, goddesses of the hunt and the moon, reinforcing its connection to intuition and sacred space.
Amethyst & the Tarot
While no single card is tied directly to amethyst, its protective and purifying nature can be felt in sword cards that call for truth and discernment, as well as in archetypes like The High Priestess and Temperance.
Amethyst reminds us that real boundaries are lived through action, not only words. It is both a shield and a teacher, guiding us to discern the difference between intention and integrity.
