How do I learn tarot?
Frequently Asked Questions: Tarot, Witchcraft, & Divination
Welcome to Season 14 of Every Day Tarot! This season, I’m answering your most frequently asked questions about tarot, witchcraft, and divination.
Today’s question: What’s the best way to start learning tarot?
Starting out can feel overwhelming: 78 cards, countless spreads, and every reader doing things differently. The key is to slow down, find your footing, and remind yourself: you don’t need to know everything right away. Tarot is ultimately about connection—between you, your deck, and the people you read for.
In this episode, we'll go over the best way to start learning tarot, how to build confidence, and why community makes all the difference.
What we explore in this episode:
Why reading for yourself is the best place to start
How practicing with others deepens your learning
Why memorization isn’t everything (and what to do instead)
Practical ways to connect with tarot communities in person and online
How sharing your practice builds trust in your own intuition
Learning Tarot Without Overwhelm
Picking up your first tarot deck can feel magical and also a little intimidating. Seventy-eight cards, countless spreads, different decks and traditions… It’s easy to feel like you’ll never “know it all.”
So what’s the best way to start learning tarot? The truth is simpler than you might think: begin by practicing, and let your intuition lead the way.
Instead of pressuring yourself to memorize everything, let your practice grow naturally:
Journal your daily or weekly card pulls
Offer readings for friends, family, or your community
Share your spreads, even casually, on social media
Join local meetups, metaphysical shops, or online groups
Speaking your interpretations aloud and engaging others in the process will grow your confidence and stretch your intuition far more than memorizing a list of keywords ever could

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:
From Norse Goddess Rune Oracle by Rebecca Joy Stark and illustrated by Sharon McLeod , I pulled the Laguz Merkstave Rán (Upright).
Starting something new can feel intimidating. Instead of forcing yourself to know it all, focus on stability, trust your intuition, and let your practice unfold at its own pace.
Reflective prompts on this card:
What would it look like to slow down and go with the flow?
Who might I invite into my practice for support and encouragement?
How can I become a lighthouse for myself before trying to guide others?
A 12-Week Tarot for Transformation Journey
Starting at the end of September, join me for a 12-week live course based on Tarot for Transformation!
We’ll spend three months together, working through the major arcana as archetypal guides. Each week, we’ll:
Focus on one major arcana card and the life themes it highlights.
Explore journaling prompts and exercises from Dreya Blume’s book.
Share experiences and support each other in a safe, witchy, and affirming space.
Participate in live one-hour calls (with replays available if you can’t join live).
This is not just about learning tarot — it’s about using tarot as a vessel for real, meaningful change in your life.
If you've ever longed for a supportive community to explore big personal shifts, or if you’re ready to commit to discovering your most authentic self, this journey is for you.
