Frequently Asked Questions: Tarot, Witchcraft, & Divination

Welcome to Season 14 of Every Day Tarot! This season, I’m answering your most frequently asked questions about tarot, witchcraft, and divination.

Today’s question: What are other types of divination beyond tarot?

Tarot may be my favorite tool, but it’s far from the only way witches and seekers have listened to the unseen. In this episode, I’ll share some of the oldest forms of divination, the tools witches still use today, and the ways you might begin to experiment with practices beyond your tarot deck.

What we explore in this episode:

  • A definition of divination and its role in witchcraft across history

  • Ancient methods of reading omens, smoke, entrails, the flight patterns of birds

  • Contemporary tools witches use today

  • Why divination reveals possibility and how free will always plays a role

A Witch’s Toolkit & Paths of Divination

As witches, many of us find one or two methods that feel like home. For me, tarot will always be a favorite, but I’ve also worked with candle magic, pendulums, astrology, and dream interpretation.

  • Augury – divination by the flight patterns of birds

  • Haruspicy – divination by examining the entrails or livers of sacrificed animals

  • Pyromancy – divination by fire and the movement of smoke or flames

  • Casting grains/sand/peas – divination by tossing natural objects and reading the patterns

  • Japanese rice & rooster method – divination by scattering rice and letting a rooster peck syllables

  • I Ching – divination by tossing and reading yarrow sticks or coins

  • Feng Shui / Geomancy – divination by interpreting earth’s energy currents and land placement

  • Oneiromancy – divination by dreams and dream interpretation

  • Tarot – divination by symbolic images on a deck of 78 cards

  • Runes – divination by casting or pulling carved stones with Norse letters

  • Scrying – divination by gazing into mirrors, bowls of water, candle flames, or smoke

  • Dowsing / Pendulum – divination by the directional swing of a pendulum

  • Psychometry – divination by touching objects or photographs to sense their energy

  • Astrology – divination by the movement and positions of celestial bodies

  • Numerology – divination by the symbolic meaning of numbers

  • Aura Reading – divination by perceiving colors, shapes, and energy fields around living beings

  • Palmistry – divination by reading the lines and mounts of the hand

  • Tasseomancy – divination by reading patterns in tea leaves or coffee grounds

From The Herbcrafter’s Tarot, I pulled the Four of Fire Elder (Upright).

You are standing at a threshold. Build foundations that will sustain your practice, and trust the ancestors and guides who protect you.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Which thresholds am I crossing in my life?

  • What practices feel like home to my spirit?

  • How can I honor the guides who stand with me as I seek clarity?

A 12-Week Tarot for Transformation Journey

Starting at the end of September, join me for a 12-week live course based on Tarot for Transformation!

We’ll spend three months together, working through the major arcana as archetypal guides. Each week, we’ll:

  • Share experiences and support each other in a safe, witchy, and affirming space.

  • Participate in live one-hour calls (with replays available if you can’t join live).

This is not just about learning tarot — it’s about using tarot as a vessel for real, meaningful change in your life.
