Divination & The Harry Potter Series

Season 13 of Every Day Tarot is all about divination, and today we’re gazing at the stars—literally. We’ll explore astrology, its history and practice, how it shows up in the Harry Potter books, and what it can teach us about seeing our lives reflected in the night sky.

What we explore in this episode:

  • How astrology is defined and practiced in history and modern life

  • The difference between astronomy (science) and astrology (divination)

  • The role astrology plays in the Harry Potter series: humans vs. centaurs

Astrology as a Personal Map

Astrology is, at its heart, a map. Your birth chart is like a cosmic snapshot—the planets, moon, and stars captured at the very moment you were born. It tells us about gifts and challenges, the edges we’re meant to grow through, and the stories that might unfold.

Astrology doesn’t tell us what will happen so much as it tells us where to look, what to tend, and what energies are humming underneath the surface. It's not about measuring data points (that's astronomy), but rather asking: what are the symbolic influences these celestial movements have on us?

I love how astrologer Chani Nicholas puts it: astrology isn’t therapy, but it is therapeutic. It’s a reminder that we are the way we are on purpose. And when we’re witnessed in that way, something softens. We feel less broken, less random, more whole.

Human vs Centaur Astrology

In the Harry Potter books, astrology shows up in two distinct ways: Humans practice it in Divination class, drawing circular charts, noting planetary positions, and predicting personal fortunes.

Centaurs like Firenze, on the other hand, take the long view. They read celestial shifts as harbingers of world events, not just day-to-day fortunes. Centaurs also approach astrology communally, across generations. And that contrast feels so rich to me.

One line that always sticks with me is Firenze’s saying, “Mars is bright tonight.” On the surface, it sounds like small talk. But beneath it is a warning—Mars, the planet of war, is blazing. Conflict is coming. The humans dismiss it, but the centaurs know better.

This contrast reveals something powerful: astrology is not just about looking at the sky, it’s about how we interpret what we see.

Tarot Cards

To explore the energy of this episode, I pulled cards:

  • The Star (Sasuraibito Tarot) - hope, renewal, and bright futures

  • The Captain (Citadel Oracle) - leadership, teamwork, and direction

  • The Hermit (Desert Illuminations) - wisdom, solitude, and guidance

💭 Today's Tarot Pull:

From The Herbcrafter’s Tarot, I pulled the Strength Garlic (Upright).

You can be protective, resilient, and powerful, while also humble and grounded. Our courage doesn't have to be loud or performative; sometimes it's quiet persistence that carries us through.

Reflective prompts on this card:

  • Where are you being asked to show courage right now?

  • How can you balance fierceness with compassion?

  • What daily practices could strengthen your resilience?
